Cecil was born on 23 Mar 1874 at Kensington, the son of Walter Alers Hankey, and was educated at Eton. He was married on 19 Apr 1899 to Gertrude Clare Fetherstonhaugh (1879-1957), by whom he had three sons and one daughter. He lived at Binderton House, Chichester (which was the country retreat of Sir Anthony Eden in the 1950s). He was Deputy Lieutenant of Sussex in 1927 and died on 28 Aug 1940, leaving an estate of £97,700 (approx £2.8 million on 2005's).

 

He gained the rank of Captain on 21 March 1900 in the service of the The Royal Sussex Regiment. He gained the rank of Honorary Major on 30 July 1904.  He gained the rank of Major on 26 May 1906. He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel on 23 April 1913 in the service of the Special Reserve of Officers. He fought in the First World War. He gained the rank of Brevet Colonel on 1 January 1919. He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Sussex on 21 July 1927.

He retired from the military on 13 May 1931.

Cecil’s third son, Flight Lieutenant Stephen Alers Hankey (1915-1943), was a pilot with 161 Squadron, a special operations unit. On the night of 16/17 December 1943, he was pilot of a Lysander returning from France with two passengers. Due to fog at his primary airfield at Tangmere, he was diverted to Ford but died when his aircraft crashed near Yapton.

 

 

Biography

Cecil George Herbert Alers Hankey was born on 23 March 1874 and was baptized on 25 April 1874 at St. Mary Abbotts Church, Kensington, West Brompton, London.

He was the son of Walter Childe Alers Hankey and Caroline Jane Anne Alers Hankey. (The surname is shown as Alers Hankey.)

His father was a merchant, and they lived at 39 Bedcliffe Gardens. His birth was registered in the Kensington Registration District, London, during the first quarter of 1874. The marriage of Gertrude Clare Fetherstonhaugh and Cecil George H. A. Hankey was registered in the St. George Hanover Square, London, registration district during the 2nd Quarter of 1899.

The death of Cecil G. H. A. Hankey was registered at Chichester, Sussex, England, during 1940.

Cecil's estate was entered into probate (limited) at Llandudno on 7 May 1941. He was of Binderton House near Chichester. Probate was granted to his widow, Clare Gertrude Hankey, William Haward, bank manager, and John Frank Whitfield, solicitor. His estate was valued at £97700 9s. 7p.

The following remembrance appeared in a newspaper in England regarding George Hankey. (The newspaper and date are not identified.)

HANKEY. -- In devoted and grateful remembrance, on this especial anniversary, of my husband, CECIL ALERS HANKEY, commanded 3 Royal Sussex Regiment, D.L. and J.P. for the County of Sussex, who died at Binderton House, Chichester, on Aug. 28, 1940. And of our two sons, WALTER (late Sussex Yeomanry), who died at Craddock, Cape Province, on Dec. 28, 1926, aged 22 years, and STEPHEN, Acting Squadron Leader, Royal Air Force, who was killed returning to Tangmere Aerodrome from air operations on Dec. 17, 1943, aged 28 years.
