Christopher Ceri Alers Hankey was born on 25 March 1944.

He is the son of Hon. Henry Arthur Alers Hankey and Vronwy Mary Fisher.

He married, firstly, Eleanor Grace Christie Beckett, daughter of Major Charles John Chichester Beckett and Katharine Christie MacLeod, on 12 September 1970.

He married, secondly, Annick Perrucon, daughter of Robert Perrucon, in 1980. He and Annick Perrucon were divorced in 2000.

Christopher Ceri Alers Hankey usually went by his middle name of Ceri.He was educated at Rugby School, Rugby, Warwickshire, England. He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, with a Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) He was an architect. He lived in 2003 at 35 Route du Vollage, Corbonod, France.
