Brigadier-General Edward Barnard Hankey, CB, DSO (1875-1959)

Edward Barnard Hankey was born at Fetcham on 6 Apr 1875 and was baptised there on 30 May. He was the second son of John Barnard Hankey and his first wife Fanny, who died when he was eight. He was educated at Eton.

He was Commissioned into the Worcestershire Regiment in Dec 1895 and joined the 2nd Battalion in Malta. He served with distinction in the Boer War and returned home after suffering a severe wound. His next appointments included a posting to Egypt and Sudan, and as ADC to the Governor of Western Australia. He saw much severe fighting in France as second in command of his regiment, but was again severely wounded. He saw much further action as battalion commander, and became a Brigadier in April 1918.

After the war, he held several senior appointments at home, before retiring in 1929. He won the DSO at Ypres in 1917, and was created CB in 1927. He was also awarded the Croix de Guerre.

Edward was married on 2 Apr 1908 to Katherine Dohan (d 1946) and by her had two daughters. He died at his home in Cirencester on 22 Mar 1959.
