Second son of John Alers Hankey of Torquay, born in 1862 at Alderley Edge and educated at Brighton College.
He was a wood carver.
Herbert Hankey was a well known yachtsman on the south coast; he was a member of several sailing clubs and was Rear-Commodore of the Torquay Corinthian Sailing Club. Among the yachts which he owned were the Albatross (18 feet), Spray, Cormorant and Scout (25 feet, built in 1906).
In 1907 he was living at Meadfoot House, Torquay, probably with his mother.
He died unmarried on 14 Aug 1921.
