Herbert Hankey (1835-1920)

 

Third surviving son of Thomas Hankey, Herbert was born on 17 Sep 1835 at Cumberland Terrace, Regents Park, and was baptised on 16 Nov 1835 at Trinity Church, Marylebone. Educated at Harrow 1849-51 and Haileybury 1854-55.

He entered the Indian Civil Service in 1856, and was Commissioner of Chittagong, Bengal. He had been superintendent of transport during the famine of 1874, and inspector-general of police in the Lower Province of Bengal in 1876, before he retired in 1878. He returned to England, and was a JP for Kent. He was one of the first players of lawn tennis in Germany.

Herbert was married on 21 Jun 1866 at Havant to Agnes Bertha Ward, and the following are his descendents in the male line:

Photographs of Herbert Hankey, and of Mrs and Miss Hankey, probably his wife and daughter, are in the Harrow School archives. He died on 6 Sep 1920 (then of Second Avenue, Hove).
