Peter John Alers Hankey was born on 2 August 1951. He is the son of Hon. Henry Arthur Alers Hankey and Vronwy Mary Fisher.

He married Margaret Catherine Walker, daughter of John D. Walker, in 1981.

He was educated at Rugby School, Rugby, Warwickshire, EnglandG. He was educated at Queen's College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. He lived in 2003 at Le Lassy, Saint Germain La Chambotte, France
