Third daughter and seventh surviving child of William and Mary Alers Hankey, Sarah was born on 4 Aug 1812 at Hackney and was baptised on 30 Aug 1812 at the Independent chapel at Bull Lane, Stepney.
She was married on 21 Jun 1859 at Paddington St James, to Henry Sewell (1819-1876), the son of her brother in law Isaac Sewell, who thereby became also her father in law. Sarah’s marriage at the age of 47 took place only two months after her father’s death, and the implication must be that either she would not marry in her father’s lifetime, or that he had disapproved of the match. Henry was a solicitor, and they lived at Oakhurst, Upper Norwood.
The 1881 census shows Sarah still living at Oakhurst, with her elder unmarried sister Elizabeth (Bessie) and a staff of six. She gave her age then as 56 rather than 69. She later lived with Bessie at Westbury, Grassington Road, Eastbourne, where she died on 25 Jul 1887.
