William Hankey (1807-1872)

 

William, third surviving son of John Peter Hankey of Finchley, was born on 10 Feb 1807 and baptised on 17 Mar at St Dunstan in the East, seven weeks before his father’s death. Educated at Christ Church, Oxford. Captain, 9th Lancers.

He was married in 1831 to Sarah Bell, by whom he had two sons and a daughter:

William and Sarah were living at Thistle Grove, London in 1831.

Middleton Hall, Linlithgowshire

 

 

In 1851 William, his wife Sarah and daughter Fanny were living at 12 Shandwick Place, Edinburgh, with twelve servants. Sarah died shortly afterwards on 4 Sep 1851 at Llanrwst.

William was married secondly a year later on 9 Sep 1852 at Brighton to Charlotte Cecile Trelawney d’Estampes (1831-1878), by whom he had one daughter Mira Charlotte.

The family lived at Middleton Hall, Linlithgowshire, where they had 14 staff in 1881.

Mira was born in 1854 at Uphall, Linlithgowshire and died in 1919. She was married in 1875 to William Lescher, JP, of Boyle’s Court, Essex and The Hall, Hutton, Essex.

William had moved from Scotland to Warley Lodge, Brentwood, and died there on 26 Nov 1872, leaving an estate under £80,000. His executors were General Henry Aitcheson Hankey (brother), Blake Alexander Hankey (nephew), Rodolph Alexander Hankey (nephew) and Beaumont Hankey (first cousin).
