1874 - 1952

Fourth son of John Alers Hankey of Torquay, Tim was born on 12 Jun 1874 at 8 Albert Road, quite close to the Zoological Gardens.

He had been named Sandford after an Irish peer.

Educated at Sherborne and in France.

He went with his brother Charlie to farm wattle in Natal, joined the South Irish Horse and served  in the Boer War 1901-02.

Returning to England, he was married on 1 Jun 1908 to Blanche Susan Mary, daughter of Edmond Berkeley Lucy of Wellesbourne, Warwick; they had met when she was living next door to Tim’s father at Meadfoot Place, Torquay.

For a time he whipped in to the Warwickshire Hounds. Tim had been commissioned into the South Irish Horse before transferring to the 3rd (P.o.W.) Dragoon Guards, of which he was later Colonel. Serving in the 1914-18 War, he was twice mentioned in dispatches and was awarded the DSO; as Remount Officer he bought French horses for the British army.

Retiring to Leusdon Lodge, Ashburton, he became a JP and was Secretary of the South Devon Hunt.

Father of one son, Richard Berkeley (1912-1976). He died on 4 May 1952 and his widow on 26 Jan 1965.
